Fang Zhang, Pianist (updated March 2017)

Chair of Music Department at Renmin University of China, School of Arts. Director of Keyboard Studies (2012-2014), Associate Professor of Piano. Deputy Executive Director of Piano Committee of Alliance of Universities, China Musician’s Association.

Fang Zhang received his BM degree in piano at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and was awarded a scholarship to enter MM degree program at the Eastman School of Music, where he also received the Eastman Performer's Certificate, the School's highest award for distinction in performance. DMA Studies as recipient of the Liberace Award scholarship at Eastman. PHD Degree, Music Theory & Analysis at Capital Normal University, Beijing.

Fang Zhang was a finalist and prize winner in the 2006 Vladimir Viardo International Piano Competition--where he was awarded the Rachmaninoff Society Special Prize--and The 12th Missouri Southern International Piano Competition. Also he was awarded First Prize in collaborative piano in the 2007 Jessie Kniesel Lieder Competition at Eastman. As a soloist & active chamber musician, Mr. Zhang has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in China and many concert tours and festivals throughout China Mainland, USA, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Israel etc..

Starting 2008,he co-founded Beijing Chamber Ensemble and RUC Trio, Recent performances including as a soloist he played several times with Shenzhen Orchestra of Symphony and Xiamen Symphony Orchestra; as a guest artist playing a solo recital in Albert Roussel International Piano competition and Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria; 2 chamber concerts in Tel Aviv, Israel; 8 chamber concerts in Festival Junger Kunstler Bayreuth in Germany. Mr. Zhang released a recital CD Recording “Live Concert” by Beijing EAV Publishing Center in 2010 and the second Album by China Record Corporation in 2016.

Born in Shenyang, China, Mr. Zhang began piano lessons at the age of four and won his first piano competition at age seven. He studied piano with Thomas Schumacher, Zhihong Guo, Fang Zhang (no relation), Yafen Zhu, Qifang Li and Lu Pan. Chamber and vocal coach study with Jean Barr, Russell Miller. He has served as jury member in several piano competitions, including Yangtze River National Piano Competition, Hong Kong-Asia Open Piano Competition,Macao Asia Piano Competition, and Qinghua University National Entrance Exam for Arts, etc. Since 2001, Mr. Zhang has been on the School of Arts faculty at Renmin University of China, where he maintains a busy piano studio. He was awarded the 2010 Annual Excellence Teaching Award at Renmin University.
